Sleeve Notes

As The Antique Six Jazzband approaches its fifteenth ‘crystal’ anniversary our latest CD Crystal Clear represents a typical programme as performed by the band in clubs and at jazz festivals all over the UK, apart from Ireland but we are working on that! The personnel of the band remains the same as on the last two CDs; Renovated (2006), and Cherished (2007) and Andy Robins and I no longer consider ourselves to be new boys.

Those of you who regularly listen to our style of jazz will be familiar with a lot of the material on this disc but a little research will reveal information which brings a new slant to your enjoyment. Bourbon Street Parade is unusual in that it was composed (words and music) by the famous New Orleans drummer Paul Barbarin. Born in New Orleans in 1899, he toured with many great bands including those of King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Henry Red Allen. He died in 1969 whilst playing in (you guessed it) a New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade!! This number is one of several that we play for the popular "Brolly Parades" at Jazz Clubs another being Joe Avery’s Piece named after a trombone player who was a member of the Tulane Brass Band in New Orleans in 1916. He died in 1955. These parades stem from the mourners and followers on at New Orleans funerals (the second line as they where known) dancing on the way from the burial to the wake and carrying umbrellas because of the sudden showers typical of the area. Trombones have always been hugely popular in New Orleans music and one of the Barbarin family appears regularly on Jackson Square to this day. Our outstanding trombonist, Richard Leach, carries on this tradition on these numbers as well as featuring on a swinging rendition of On Treasure Island. We have included four tracks performed by our star vocalist Chris Mercer, also famous for his hot trumpet playing! Andy Robins, Clinton Sedgely and I feature on Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans. Keeping us all in time and swinging is the engine room of the band, Graham Smith on percussion. Apart from providing the best drumming that I have played with he also manages our bookings, provides the amplification and carries half of the band to engagements, thanks Graham.

Thanks also go to our great friend and recording supremo Peter Kings and to all the promoters who book us.

But most of all thanks to all of you for your support.
