History

History The band was founded in 1994 by veteran trombonist and antique dealer, (hence the name!) Keith Hockin, who began his career in the Nottingham area in the 1960's playing with the bands of Eric Peat and Brian Woolley. Keith was instrumental in bringing together the original line-up: Alan Bateman (trumpet & reeds), Dick Chapman (clarinet/saxes), Richard Rose (drums), Pete Long (banjo) and Jackie Chapman (bass) which set the standard for the subsequent ten years and saw the band make the transition from a fortnightly gig at The Trout at Lechlade to its present successful touring and festival status. The band's development has been aided by changes in personnel and the present line-up came together in the autumn of 2005, after Dick Chapman's death and Jackie's retirement from the band. They are currently one of the busiest bands on the circuit.

The Antique Six Recordings

"The Antique Six produce a swinging sound that owes something to Dixieland, without the raving. They happily tackle a fair mix of titles on their own merits, giving the tunes the right mood all the way, some of which are well away from the standard titles. All in all, a well performed, tuneful collection that, like Mansion Polish, puts a shine on the antiques!" Bernie Tyrrell, Editor, Nostalgia Magazine 1996

From a review by John Crocker, International Clarinetist and Saxophonist. "The finely balanced and very disciplined front line grooves wonderfully over what is surely one of the best rhythm sections on the scene, reminiscent of the Barber band of the late 50's. This Antique Six CD is a fine example of their talent and an indication of the breadth of their repertoire. This, the sixth CD from them, yet again shows why they are such as success wherever they appear. A good, varied programme of jazz, well played and not least superbly recorded by Adam Parr." John Crocker - March 2004

From a review by Keith Nichols "The Antique Six are in fact far from antique – the name could imply a collection of octogenarians on their last legs, but in this case, nothing is farther than the reality. A much travelled orchestra, very popular wherever they perform, playing their own brand of vigorous traditional jazz, the wide repertoire stretching from New Orleans to Swing. TRAVELLIN’ their seventh offering to date, succeeds very well in the respect that it reflects the live sound of the band very accurately, especially in an age where some audio products fall far short of the original, or, alternatively seem over-polished, thanks to the meddling of zealous studio knob-twiddlers." Keith Nichols - September 2005

A review by George Giles. 'RENOVATED, restored, reconditioned, refurbished, revamped, rejuvenated, they all apply to the new line-up playing as The Antique Six Jazzband and their superb new recording. The liner notes adequately detail the reason for new band members Chris Pearce and Andy Robins who have been integrated into the band with what seems to be effortless ease the result being that The Antique Six have not lost any momentum in their quest for greatness or their busy schedule. The Antique Six are, I believe, a perfectly balanced band having an excellent front line led by trumpeter Chris Mercer ably supported by trombonist Richard Leach and Chris Pearce’s reeds. They are backed by a superb rhythm section of Clinton Sedgley, Graham Smith and Andy Robins. The fifteen tunes selected for this recording allows the band to swing from start to finish with superb ensemble playing and good solos to numerous to mention in detail. However, Chris Pearce’s hauntingly beautiful rendition of Over The Rainbow, a tune not normally played by Jazz Bands, is quite outstanding. The inclusion of a couple of rarely heard tunes, Harlem Folk Dance and Smokey Mokes certainly adds interest for prospective purchasers who can obtain a copy at all the band’s sessions  .Alternatively give Graham Smith a call on 01527 66692. RENOVATED is thoroughly recommended.'

CHERISHED, The Antique Six Jazzband’s superb new C.D was recorded exactly a year after their very popular previous C.D. “Renovated” and it is sure to be another best seller.  Without doubt, The Antique Six are one of the best and therefore most popular and busy bands on the U.K. Jazz scene and rightly so, they are an excellent band who not only play good Jazz but also entertain.  There are sixteen tunes on this recording, two of which are rarely heard (Memphis Shake and Last Mile Blues) and the band takes each one in their stride with superb ensemble playing and good solos throughout.

CHERISHED, a well-presented C.D. with good sleeve notes is thoroughly recommended as an excellent C. D. accurately replicating this great band’s live performances.

Copies are available at all the band’s sessions.  Alternatively give Graham Smith a call on 01527 66692.
